Comparing Moving Quotes Before a Property Handover
Compare moving quotes by the belongings, collection and delivery tasks, packing, timing and exclusions before arranging your property handover and move.

What does a moving quotation actually promise to take from your present home to the property you are buying? Two prices can differ because one describes packed boxes delivered to an entrance while another covers packing, furniture preparation and placement in rooms. Before deciding which proposal suits you, give each price a clearly defined journey and set of belongings. This lets you identify work that remains yours to arrange, rather than discovering it when the vehicle arrives.
For a move connected with a Syrian property purchase, obtain proposals from providers whose identity, actual service area and suitability you can verify. This guide does not identify an available moving company or establish local charges, contractual duties or insurance protection. Ask appropriate local advisers about terms you do not understand before committing. The useful starting point is a written description that the proposed provider can assess and correct.
Define the load before comparing the totals
Create a dated list of the belongings you intend to move, grouped by their present rooms. Give larger pieces a recognisable description and distinguish possessions travelling with you from items staying behind. A planned sale of an old wardrobe is still uncertain until you have settled what will happen to it. If the quotation assumes that wardrobe is excluded, record that assumption explicitly rather than allowing two providers to price different loads unnoticed.
Ask how the provider establishes quantities and the space or handling they require. Record whether the proposal follows a visit, video assessment, photographs or your own description. If a cupboard or storeroom was omitted from that assessment, add it to the clarification list. Avoid inventing weights, package counts or dismantling instructions to complete a form. Ask what information is needed and who will establish it.
The FTC's advice on hiring a moving company recommends comparing written estimates that describe the belongings after an inspection or adequate description. Its US registration and consumer procedures do not set Syrian requirements. The relevant reading principle here is narrower: check the load represented by each estimate before treating the totals as comparable.
Follow the service from collection to placement
For each proposal, identify the collection address, destination and any additional stop. Then describe the endpoint: unloading at the building entrance, bringing goods into the apartment, or placing identified pieces in their intended rooms. If belongings are being divided between a home and a separate store, ask for that division to be reflected in the actual quotation. One unspecified destination does not explain two deliveries.
Compare the tasks around transport. Who supplies packing materials, packs fragile objects, labels boxes, prepares furniture and reassembles eligible pieces? Ask the provider to identify tasks it excludes or requires another specialist to perform. Disconnecting an appliance, for example, should not be assumed to follow from a promise to carry it. Leave technical preparation to a suitably competent person under arrangements that have actually been confirmed.
The furniture delivery route guide helps prepare item and access information for assessment. Attach the relevant findings to the moving enquiry instead of copying a room's dimensions into a transport quote. Ask which entrance, floor and handling route the provider has priced. A physical route enquiry and a written service price should refer to the same pieces and destination.

Make handover timing an explicit assumption
A proposed moving date can depend on events outside the moving company's control. Record what must happen before collection and before delivery: permission to enter, someone available to receive the load, and whatever purchase or occupation steps your advisers identify. Tell the provider which dates are provisional. A quotation received for a Tuesday delivery does not establish that the new property will be available on Tuesday.
Ask what the proposal says about a delayed start, waiting at the destination, a changed date or belongings requiring temporary storage. Request the applicable basis of any charge and the circumstances that trigger it; do not insert an assumed hourly rate or free waiting period. If storage is offered, clarify collection, storage and later redelivery separately, including which parts have actually been priced and which require another quotation.
The property handover checklist covers recording access and agreed delivery at the property itself. Use that record to update the moving arrangements when the facts change. Keep the provider's scheduling confirmation distinct from the seller's or representative's statement about access, so one party's expectation is not passed on as another party's commitment.
Test the difference with a hypothetical load
Consider a fictional household moving twelve packed boxes, a bed frame and a dining table between two identified apartments. Proposal A includes transport and unloading at the destination entrance. Proposal B describes collection from the current rooms, transport and placement in the new rooms, with dismantling and reassembly of the bed subject to assessment. No prices are assigned in this example. The first question is which unfinished tasks each proposal leaves with the household.
To compare the proposals for the same intended result, ask A whether room collection and room placement can be included and obtain its answer in writing. Ask B what its assessment must confirm about the bed and whether the table requires separate preparation. Until those replies arrive, keep the two service descriptions separate. Adding a guessed allowance to A would disguise an unanswered question as a completed quotation.
Now suppose the household retains the wardrobe it originally planned to sell. Send the revised load list to both providers and request confirmation of the effect on scope, timing and price. Keep the earlier list with its quotation, but mark which version is current. This small change illustrates why a provider's name and total alone are insufficient identifiers for a moving proposal.
Close the remaining questions before booking
The FMCSA's moving preparation guidance distinguishes the estimate describing charges and services from the inventory of belongings in its US context. Use that distinction to ask which document defines your proposed work and which identifies the load. Its mandatory forms, liability arrangements and interstate rules are not imported here. Obtain an explanation of the actual documents offered for your move.
Finish the comparison with the provider's verified details, quotation date, load version, service endpoints, exclusions, timing assumptions, total and currency, and proposed payment stages. Ask what any damage-related promise means under the supplied terms rather than assuming the transport price includes a particular protection. Record unresolved answers with a named follow-up contact. Choose only after you can explain what remains to be arranged and how a change in the handover plan would be addressed.
